Who I help

Support for children who learn differently

I work with primary aged children, usually from Reception to Year 6, whose needs are not fully met in a busy classroom. That includes children who:

  • have an EHCP, or receive SEN support at school
  • are autistic, or have ADHD or other attention and sensory differences
  • find reading, writing or spelling hard, including children with dyslexia
  • find maths difficult or worrying, and have lost confidence with numbers
  • have speech, language or communication needs
  • are anxious about school, or are currently out of school
  • are home educated and would benefit from specialist input
  • need calm, patient help to catch up after a difficult period

Not sure whether I am the right fit? That is exactly what the free initial conversation is for.

How I help

Tailored sessions, one child at a time

Every child is different, so every plan is different. These are the areas I focus on most.

Literacy

Phonics, reading fluency and comprehension, spelling, handwriting and the confidence to write. Structured, multisensory approaches that suit children who have not clicked with classroom methods.

Numeracy

Number sense, place value, times tables and problem solving, using concrete and visual methods before moving to the abstract, so understanding is secure rather than memorised.

Social skills and confidence

Turn taking, conversation, understanding and managing feelings, coping with frustration, and building the confidence to have a go when something feels hard.

Working with school and EHCP targets

With your permission I can link sessions to your child’s school targets or EHCP outcomes, and share short progress notes so everyone is pulling in the same direction.

What a session looks like

Sessions are usually an hour, one to one, in your home with a parent or carer present. Shorter sessions can work better for younger children, and we will agree what suits yours. The first few sessions are about getting to know your child and what helps them learn; after that we build a routine they can trust, with plenty of small wins along the way.

You get a short note after each session, so you always know what we have worked on and what to try at home if you want to.

About Nicola

Hello, I’m Nicola

I am a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) specialising in special educational needs and disabilities, working in primary education in Gloucestershire. Day to day I support children with a wide range of needs, one to one and in small groups, and I have seen time and again how much difference the right support, at the right pace, can make to a child’s confidence.

I am patient, calm and encouraging. I believe every child can learn when we find the path that works for them, and I take real pleasure in the moment something finally clicks. Mossgrove Tutoring is my way of offering that same support to families who need it outside school.

  • HLTA with a specialism in SEND
  • Experienced in managing diverse and complex learning needs
  • Enhanced DBS checked, with up to date safeguarding training
  • Flexible scheduling, including after school, weekends and school holidays

Safeguarding and trust

Your child’s safety comes first

The same standards I work to in school, written down so you know exactly what to expect.

Checked and trained

Enhanced DBS check, and up to date safeguarding training through my school role. I am happy to show you my certificate at our first meeting.

Never alone

Sessions take place in your home with a parent or carer present in the house. I do not hold sessions at my own home.

Policies in writing

You receive my safeguarding policy, privacy notice and terms before we start, and they are available on request at any time.

Clear communication

All contact goes through parents and carers, never directly with children on social media or messaging apps. You get a short note after every session.

Questions

Things parents often ask

What ages do you tutor?

Primary aged children, usually from Reception to Year 6. I am also happy to talk about support for children in Year 7 who are finding the move to secondary school hard.

How do we get started?

Send me an email with a little about your child. We will arrange a free phone or video chat, and if it feels right we book a first session. After the first few sessions we review together how things are going.

Can we use our EHCP personal budget or direct payment?

Yes. Many families fund sessions this way. I provide monthly invoices that are suitable for personal budget records, and I am happy to supply the documents your local authority asks for.

Will you work with my child’s school?

With your permission, yes. Linking sessions to school targets or EHCP outcomes works well, and I can share short progress notes with your child’s teacher or SENCO if you would like me to.

Do you hold sessions at your own home?

No. Sessions are in your home, with a parent or carer present. This keeps things familiar and comfortable for your child and is the right approach for safeguarding.

What if my child has a bad day and cannot manage the session?

It happens, and it is never a problem. We adapt on the day: a shorter session, a different activity, or simply a calmer one. Longer term, sessions are planned around what your child can manage, not the other way round.

Get in touch

Let’s talk about your child

Tell me a little about your child, what they find hard and what you are hoping for, and we will arrange a free, no obligation chat. I am in school during the day, so I usually reply in the afternoon or evening.
